What is a stench chemical?

Stench chemicals have an extremely foul smell that is detectable by the human nose in parts-per-billion amounts, depending on the compound. While the stench may not be known to have toxic effects, it can still negatively impact laboratory workers and people outside the laboratory (even outside the building) by inducing nausea and/or vomiting, and causing reports of gas leaks or sewage problems. Stench chemical odors have been responsible for building evacuations at ASU. Therefore, handling and disposal of stench compounds should be carefully controlled in order to minimize the release of odors.
